The
University celebrates its centenary in 2004: 25
April is the actual anniversary of the granting
of the University’s Charter by Edward VII.
Over the
past hundred years, the University has grown into one
of the country’s leading institutions of higher
education. It has developed an international reputation
for excellence in research and the provision of first-class
innovative learning and teaching. The centenary is an
opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the last
100 years, and also an opportunity to lay some foundations
on which to build in the University’s second century.
There are
therefore both celebratory and forward-looking dimensions
to the programme being devised to mark the centenary.
The events include:
- an extra
day’s holiday for the current generation of
staff (which for most people will be Friday 27 August
2004);
- a centenary
exhibition in and around the Parkinson Court, which
will be opened with a special ceremony on Thursday
22 April;
- Alumni
Day, on Saturday 24 April – which will include
the Convocation Lecture given by Alan
Yentob, lunch and AGM, and for which departments
are being encouraged to arrange reunions and other
events for their alumni;
- a Centenary
Celebration Ceremony in the Great Hall on Thursday
29 April – which will include the conferment
of honorary degrees.

Other
events include:
- four centenary
concerts in March, starting with the City
Lunchtime Concert on Monday 8 in Leeds Town Hall
at 1.05pm, the Lunchtime
recital on Thursday 11, a Rush
hour concert on Friday 12, and a Charity
concert on Friday 19 in the refectory at 7.30pm.
- a centenary
conference (on Wednesday 12 May) organised by
the Centre for Heritage Research
- a recital
on Friday 25 June 2004 by the world-renowned pianist,
Murray Perahia, to mark the opening of the refurbished
Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall.
To mark the
centenary, the Parkinson
Building is being upgraded and refurbished, to strengthen
its significance as the University’s ‘front
door’ and to develop the role of the Parkinson
Court as the communal heart of the University. Plans
include the provision of a café in the Parkinson
Court and the floodlighting of the exterior of the Parkinson
Building.
The Parkinson building has inspired the centenary logo,
see http://campus.leeds.ac.uk/press/centenary.htm
for guidelines on its use.
Further details will be announced in due course.
