26 October 2009 Peter Douglas Colleagues will be saddened to learn of the death, on 12 October 2009, of Mr Peter Douglas, retired member of the Sport & Physical Activity staff.
Peter was appointed to the then Department of Physical Education in 1978 as a Porter at the Sports Centre. Besides providing customer facing duties at the Sports Centre, Peter used his many skills to make equipment for student and staff projects within the Department as well as doing general maintenance work.
In 1983, when the new Sports Hall One was opened, Peter was promoted to Supervisor within a team of staff to operate the Sports facilities in a more commercial manner. He fulfilled this role with great success and played a key role in training staff, particularly student staff; developing a maintenance plan and helping to raise standards in his areas of responsibility.
He was extremely proud to achieve his University 25 year service award in 2003.
Peter was a popular and highly respected member of staff, whose advice was greatly valued and his ideas contributed greatly to the efficient running of the Sports facilities on Campus.
Peter retired through ill-health from his post in September 2006. Contrasting greatly with his former busy lifestyle, his rare illness severely constrained his activity but in typical fashion, it was tackled with fortitude, ably assisted by his wife, Pat and his family.
The Funeral service for Peter has been held.
