New year honours

Professor of bacterial genetics in the school of biology Simon Baumberg has been awarded an OBE for his services to science and honorary graduate Dr Fanny Waterman becomes a Dame.

He joined Leeds in 1966 and in addition to research in to the genetics of bacteria has had many roles within the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). He has chaired the MRC's grant committee and chairs its non-clinical stem cell research committee

Professor Baumberg said: "Work for the research councils has the attraction of being intellectually stimulating and giving one insight into areas of research outside one's own particular field, something that academics are traditionally expected to cherish.

"I enjoyed my two stints on RAE panels, which confirmed for me that despite the many pressures and constraints on the academic profession, a remarkable amount of excellent research is currently coming out of UK universities."

Honorary graduate and chair of the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition Dr Fanny Waterman becomes a Dame of the British Empire for her services to music.
